--wooden ship bilge/leak dynamics--

 a flash-in-the-pan--

i was watching television the other day( a program about boats), and it occurred to me that the reason wooden ships leak into the bilge very much( when first launched), and then "seal up tight", after sailing the oceans for awhile, is due to the bottom of the hull becoming covered in barnacles, and other marine life( like a floating coral-reef, on the oceans surface)--

conclusion--

this condition, combined with the pressures of the ocean, attempting to flood the boat, through the hull, seals the boat( from the marine growth being pressed tightly into the cracks of the hull, creating a good seal)--

a note to the bridge--

this leads me to suggest, that "keel-hauling" persons not-in-good-standing with the captain, may diminish hull integrity( via the dislodging of barnacles/marine growth on the hull incurred during the procedure), potentially increasing bilge-pump time, and frequency...a small amount--

  best wishes, john kruschke--
