the concept--
i suggest, that the branches of a tree, are the "internal veins" of the tree, resurfacing outside the bark( tree exterior)--
summary--
this idea, could explain why the beginning of a branch appears as a sprout( on the side of the tree's trunk), showing us what a "knot" in a tree, really is( the tree's "internal vein", surfacing)...
broken or pruned branches, cause visible "knots" on a tree's exterior, and after a tree is cut into planks, a tree's "internal veins" that lead to all of it's branches, from the "core" of the tree's trunk, can be seen...
conclusion--
"knots" are the off-shoots, of the "main vein", to the branches, that support the "solar fields" weight( the canopy), and also supply nutrients to the plant/tree's canopy--
