in a nutshell, the roots extract certain nutrients, depending on the type of plant(genetics), to be sent to the fruit of the plant, and the leaves...this determines the vitamins/minerals the plant will deplete from the soil, on a molecular level, through the capillary action the roots use, when absorbing water/vitamins/minerals from the soil, for plant growth--
